A need for higher housing starts to be the “new normal”

The Department of Housing has published housing starts data for December. While the 2025 total was disappointing at 16k, December’s 3k was by far the highest figure all year, and comes after a much-increased total in 2024 of 69k. Going forward, there is a need for more than 4k homes to be commenced each month to be consistent with the Government target of more than 50k new homes a year for the remainder of the decade.
