We have commissioned Professor David Farrell to undertake a review of the current political backdrop in Ireland in advance of the general election which will be held on November 29th. The general election has been called following strong results in June’s local and European elections for Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil. Both parties have seen an improved standing in opinion polls, whereas weak results in June for Sinn Féin aligned with negative polling momentum of late. While polls may not always be reliable predictors, the main incumbent parties look set to form the basis of the next government, running counter to global election trends this year where incumbents have lost vote share.
