Speculation mounts on snap 2023 Irish general election

Irish media reported yesterday (March 14th) that the possibility of calling an early general election, perhaps as soon as November 2023, is now being considered by government insiders. The rationale is that the incumbent parties could benefit from a ‘giveaway’ October Budget, utilising the expected large surplus in 2023. Also, opposition party Sinn Fein’s lead in opinion polls has softened in recent months. Opinion polls show that no party will win a majority, so the next government will have to be another broad coalition.
