The Dáil (Irish Parliament) returns today, with a vote of no confidence in a senior minister kicking off proceedings. Barring a major surprise, the government will win. Several key policy areas need to be agreed in the forthcoming term – housing has been set out, with the budget and a carbon budget also up for negotiation. Sinn Féin, the main opposition party, leads in recent opinion polls. Perceived instability has been a factor for some time in Irish politics – delivery on priorities and a desire to avoid an election will be key for government parties.
