Yesterday’s Central Statistics Office (CSO) data showed Ireland’s population rising above 5m, up 0.7% on the year, for the first time since the 19th century. However, population growth slowed as COVID-19 led to a marked decline in inward migration, which should unwind in 2022. However, natural population growth also decreased due to falling fertility and excess mortality over the past year.
