On Friday (December 11th), Boris Johnson insisted that the demand the UK remains aligned with the EU, accepting level playing field provisions into the future, was an outrageous infringement of sovereignty. It now appears the UK had accepted the principle all along, now focused on bargaining how the EU can impose retaliatory tariffs in the event of divergence - a far narrower gap between the two sides than Johnson's grandstanding last week suggested and implying there is clearly scope to conclude a deal.
