Goods trade (January) and planning permissions (Q4)

DAVY VIEW

Trade data for January show that exports bounced back strongly on the month following a relatively weak second half in 2016. We expect a larger contribution to GDP growth this year. Planning permission data for Q4 2016 show a 7.8% rise on the year in new residential units. Overall in 2016, 16,375 units were granted permissions, a 25% increase on 2015. Although this is still well below demographic demand, it signals further strong growth in residential construction in 2017.
