Retail data signal robust consumer spending growth in Q2

DAVY VIEW

Today’s retail sales data show that the robust growth in Irish consumer spending has been maintained in Q2 2017. Retail sales (ex-motor trades) volumes rose by 1.9% in Q2, up 6.9% on the year. This follows a 1.8% gain in Q1 2017, +6.0% year-on-year (yoy). Overall, this leaves us well on track for our forecast of a 3.4% rise in Irish consumer spending in 2017, driven by the strong recovery in the labour market and falling retail prices.
