The downturn in yesterday’s Markit UK Household Finance Index suggests that consumers are finally beginning to fear a hard Brexit. Appetite for major purchases fell to a five-year low and perceptions of job security to a two-year low. Although UK consumer spending has remained resilient for now, the deterioration in sentiment suggests that spending could be reined in late in 2019.
