Global equities fall 6.1% in May; trade spat to the fore

The MSCI AC World Index fell by 6.1% in May – the first monthly decline of 2019. The loss reduces the year-to-date (ytd) gain to 8.5%. Escalating concerns over the trade dispute between the US and China provided the primary catalyst for the sell-off. The month saw developed markets depreciate by 6.0% (+9.1% ytd) and emerging had their poorest since October 2018 (-7.8%), falling 6.9% (+4.4% ytd).
